I’ve been baking since I was 12 or 13. The first thing I baked on my own was a jellyroll. My mom thought I should have started with something easier. I didn’t. Surprisingly, it turned out well.
I’ve had some ups and downs with baking over the years. Thankfully, it’s been more ups than downs.
Baking has always been a form of relaxation for me. People look at me like I’m crazy when I say that, but it is. I never thought about making money from it until a number of co-workers, my boss, my law school friends, and my family started asking me if I was planning to open a shop.
I think I will at some point in the future, but for now I need to get better at my craft. If I do open a bespoke cake business, it will be called The Vintage Cake Cottage.
What’s in the name?
As I’ve gotten older (and I’m doing things like having a house built), I’ve discovered that I like vintage- house styles, clothing, decor, etc. In fact a lot of the cakes I make come from my mom’s 1978 edition of the Joy of Cooking. So I think I’d like to bake vintage cakes and desserts for people. Also, in terms of cake decoration, I definitely go for the class/nostalgic rather than the crazy new fangled. Until I get everything up and running, I’ll be baking all of these vintage goodies in the English style cottage I hope to build soon.
I have a lot of work ahead of me, but it will be a fun journey I hope!!
